Symetra’s Giving Spirit Reaches Across Puget Sound Region

BELLEVUE, Wash. — In the first six months of 2010, Symetra Financial employees contributed to more than 100 nonprofit organizations (primarily in the Puget Sound area) and logged in hundreds of volunteer hours through the company’s matching gift and matching time program. Symetra also supported several other local community events through its corporate giving and sponsorship programs.

“Strong employee engagement in the community is a core value at Symetra,” said Stan Emert, managing director of Corporate Social Responsibility. “From volunteering at the Special Olympic Summer Games at Fort Lewis, to landscaping and repairing a senior center in Carnation, Wash., to wrapping and preparing daffodils for an American Cancer Society fundraiser, our employees are involved partners across the region.”

Here are some of the major community initiatives supported by Symetra, its employees and distribution partners during the first half of 2010:
  • Each month, three teams of Symetra employees prepare and serve meals to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, next to Seattle Children’s Hospital. In May 2010, their efforts were honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, issued by Points of Light Institute and the Corporation for National and Community Service, recognizes the best in American community spirit.
  • For the sixth year running, Symetra sponsored the Symetra Bellevue Family 4th. In addition to fireworks, food and entertainment, the event featured the Symetra Community Spotlight Pavilion, which connected attendees to local nonprofit organizations and volunteer opportunities. Representatives from organizations, including the Pacific Science Center, YMCA and Senior Services, showcased their programs with interactive displays.

  • Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks honored top Seattle Public School teachers at a recognition luncheon in May as part of the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program. In June, Nathan Hale received $15,000 in new science equipment for winning the program’s MVP Award grant. This spring, Symetra announced the expansion of the Heroes program to the Chicago and Atlanta markets, with distribution partners playing a key implementation role. The program also is expanding locally into the Renton and Shoreline public school districts, in addition to Seattle, in the fall.
  • As part of the company’s partnership with the Seattle Sounders FC in the Symetra Active Bodies Active Minds program, Symetra representatives and Sounders players visited several Puget Sound-area schools and after-school clubs during the first half of the year, including Whitman Middle School, Ballard High School, Roosevelt High School, the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club and Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club. Students learned about the importance of staying active.
  • Symetra also sponsored the following fundraising events in 2010: Overlake Hospital’s Bandage Ball, the Youth Eastside Service Breakfast, the American Girl Fashion Show benefiting Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Fred Hutch Award Luncheon, Friends of Frank DeMiero Jazz Festival, and University of Washington’s Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition.
  • Coming in August: Symetra employees will be out in force working on a variety of community projects during the Symetra Week of Service. Set for Aug. 23-27, 2010, volunteers will paint, landscape, stock shelves, clean and organize on behalf of nonprofits across the Puget Sound region.
