Symetra Promotes Sharmila Swenson to Vice President, Public Affairs and Social Impact

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Symetra Life Insurance Company, a national provider of employee benefits, annuities and life insurance, today announced the promotion of Sharmila Swenson to vice president, Public Affairs and Social Impact. Ms. Swenson joined Symetra in 2019 as AVP, Public Affairs.
“Sharmila Swenson has been instrumental in developing and strengthening Symetra’s relationships with key stakeholders, including elected officials, nonprofit leaders and our peers in the business community. Under her leadership, Symetra successfully established its first public affairs program and expanded the reach and strategic positioning of our community relations work,” said Trinity Parker, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Symetra. “Sharmila and her team have been responsible for introducing our Symetra Empowers Communities program, coordinating our Care and Feeding community response to COVID-19, activating our community programming partnerships with the Seattle Kraken and Seattle Storm, and most recently, launching our first corporate social responsibility initiative, Symetra Social Impact.”
“A trusted leader in the Puget Sound region, Sharmila has been a consistent, thoughtful voice on diversity, equity and inclusion and social justice. She has elevated Symetra’s involvement in the communities where we do business, increased opportunities for employee engagement in those communities, and ensured that our community resources are focused on creating the highest impact for those most in need,” added Ms. Parker.
Prior to Symetra, Ms. Swenson was manager for Local Government Affairs and Public Policy at Puget Sound Energy. She was previously a relationship development officer for Treehouse, a nonprofit organization addressing the essential education and enrichment needs of youth in foster care. She formerly served as deputy chief of staff for then Congressman Jay Inslee, becoming director of operations in 2012 for Governor-elect Inslee’s transition team.
Ms. Swenson serves on the board of trustees of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and is chair-elect of the board of directors at Treehouse. A member of the Association of Community College Trustees’ diversity, equity and inclusion committee, she also serves on the board of trustees of Highline College in Des Moines, Wash.
