Our employees are engaged and strongly committed to giving back to our communities. We empower them to be generous with both their time and resources to foster inclusive, healthy places in which to live and work.
We surpassed our 2025 goal with 65.4% employee participation in our community programs through opportunities like:
Summer of Service
We celebrated the 14th year of our Symetra Summer of Service program with a return to unrestricted, in-person volunteering post-COVID. Nationwide, 481 employees stepped up to fill 649 volunteer spots and donate over 1,100 volunteer hours to 42 nonprofits. Since 2009, the number of hours logged has surpassed 20,270 for this annual campaign.
BOLD Program (Board Orientation Leadership Development)
Our BOLD (Board Orientation Leadership Development) program encourages employees to provide leadership and support to organizations in their communities by offering nonprofit leadership training and then matching program participants to nonprofit boards that align with their talents and interests. Nationally, employees currently serve on 39 nonprofit boards, with 12 new board members taking up new roles in the last year.
Empowers Community Award
Our Empowers Community Award is given each year to the employee who best represents Symetra’s spirit of service, volunteering and leadership in their local community. Winners receive a cash award and a $1,000 donation to their nonprofit of choice. In 2022, Addie Hume was recognized as our Symetra Empowers Communities honoree for her role on the Symetra Service Squad, where she coordinates community service projects for our Enfield, Connecticut office, and has committed more than 370 hours of volunteer service for the Children's Museum of Holyoke since 2016.
In 2022, our employees donated nearly $1.1 million (including company match) to support 1,600 nonprofits nationwide. Major funding efforts included:
Our holiday giving kicked off on Giving Tuesday, with $22 seeded to every employee giving account. Employees generously gave to over 500 nonprofits in November and December, donating over $216,500 including company match.
Our 11th annual I CARE campaign helps employees identify and support the nonprofits that mean the most to them. In 2022, employees pledged $583K (including company match) in support of more than 550 nonprofits.
